WMS lost two of its Shed members in recent months to oesophageal cancer soon after being diagnosed. This unhappy occurrence raised the question of recognising early signs of illnesses and taking appropriate action. Whilst information is readily available, it can be overwhelming or easily forgotten. A structured presentation — highlighting key symptoms and when to seek medical advice — would be far more effective.

WMS developed the idea of an experienced GP delivering talks on common conditions affecting men over 60. Given the close geographical proximity of our neighbouring Shed at Burley-in-Wharfedale, we decided to combine with them in arranging a presentation. After discussions with them, we agreed that the subject was so wide, not just cancer, that it would be necessary to cover each condition separately, but starting with cancer.

On 24th October 2024, members of both sheds gathered for a presentation featuring Fraser Corry (Macmillan Cancer Support), retired Leeds GP Stewart Manning, and Dr Janet Kyriakides (Ilkley & Wharfedale Medical Practice), who specialises in diet and lifestyle’s impact on cancer. The speakers provided clear guidance on recognising concerning symptoms, and attendees received informative leaflets. Please click on the links below to view the leaflets in PDF format:

Diet & Lifestyle – Preventing cancer and reducing recurrence.

Following its success, WMS and BMS will collaborate again in 2025 on early signs of heart disease, stroke, lung conditions, and mental health.
