Losing Shed members soon after diagnosis raised the question of recognising early signs of illness and taking appropriate action.
While information is readily available, it can be overwhelming or easily forgotten. A structured presentation—highlighting key symptoms and when to seek medical advice—can be far more effective.
WMS developed the idea of an experienced GP delivering talks on common conditions affecting men over 60. After discussions with Burley in Wharfedale Men’s Shed (BMS), we agreed to cover each condition separately, starting with cancer.
On 24th October 2024, members of both sheds gathered for a presentation featuring Fraser Corry (Macmillan Cancer Support), retired Leeds GP Stewart Manning, and Dr Janet Kyriakides (Ilkley & Wharfedale Medical Practice), who specialises in diet and lifestyle’s impact on cancer.
The speakers provided clear guidance on recognising concerning symptoms, and attendees received informative leaflets:
- Early Signs of Cancer – Knowing what’s not normal for your body.
- Diet & Lifestyle – Preventing cancer and reducing recurrence.
Following its success, WMS and BMS will collaborate again in 2025 on early signs of heart disease, stroke, lung conditions, and mental health.
