Otley Matters!

The Wharfedale Men’s Shed (WMS), which is based in Otley, has completed bird boxes for Wildlife Friendly Otley, adding to recent projects like wooden bench refurbishments and garden planters. Meeting every Monday at Otley Courthouse, WMS offers social connection and woodworking skills. We’re fundraising for a larger workshop to expand our community impact.

An Unusual Request

When Ani, a friend of Wharfedale Men’s Shed, approached Secretary Bob M with a heartfelt request, he knew it was a special task. Ani’s friend had lost her husband, Steve, and his ashes remained in a cardboard box. She wondered if WMS could craft a wooden alternative – something more lasting and meaningful.

Wharfedale Men’s Shed – A typical day

Wharfedale Men’s Shed showcases incredible craftsmanship daily, from turning custom oak gavels to repairing steel chairs and vacuum cleaners. Highlights include precision lathe tool grinding, designing a PCB for a hedgehog charity, and creative problem-solving like refrigerator handle repairs. WMS blends traditional skills and modern techniques to support the community.

Barristers North Eastern Circuit Charity donation and visit

The Gavel being handed over to our visitors

Just before Christmas 2024, WMS was honoured to receive a generous donation from the North Eastern Circuit Charity. In gratitude, the WMS Committee crafted a solid oak gavel, presented on 20th January 2025 to Charity representatives Eleanor Fry and Ashleigh Metcalfe, who were thrilled with this token of thanks.

Wharfedale  Men’s Shed supports REMAP

REMAP, a charity helping people with disabilities through customised equipment, teamed up with WMS after treasurer Dave Scannell connected with its Airedale group. Over two years, WMS crafted unique aids like ramps and tables, bringing smiles to recipients and showcasing the Shed’s woodworking skills.

The Continuing Search for a New Home

Wharfedale Men’s Shed (WMS) began its journey in March 2019 and has grown with a vision for a purpose-built home. After years of searching and planning, a design for a new workshop has secured planning consent, marking an exciting step toward making this vision a reality.
