Baildon Freemasons back Wharfedale Men’s Shed

The Eccleshill Freemasons’ Lodge has kindly donated a very generous £1,500 to our Shed. This will be used for the purchase of tools and towards our new Shed which we are hoping to build over the next couple of years. The story was published in the Ilkley Gazette.
Clifton Village Hall Book Exchange – Installed 31st May, 2024

In May 2024, WMS crafted and installed a custom book exchange cabinet for Clifton Village Hall. Constructed with durable hardwood, polycarbonate, and weatherproof cladding, it features a shingled roof and a laser-etched “BOOK EXCHANGE” sign. Inspired by a similar design, the cabinet was built to ensure long-lasting functionality and charm.
Jim’s Fence – Installed 4th June, 2024

In June 2024, WMS helped a friend of Bob Miles by creating a custom paling fence in Horsforth. The fence, designed to hide unsightly water butts, was completed by Stuart and Bob, who enjoyed tea and biscuits during the job. The grateful homeowner promised a donation in return.
Building nesting Barn Owls a Home on the Denton Estate

Wharfedale Men’s Shed crafted a special Barn Owl nesting box in partnership with Wildlife Friendly Otley, dedicating it to the memory of Chris Cullum. Installed on the Denton Estate, the box quickly became home to a pair of barn owls, resulting in five fluffy chicks—a heartwarming tribute to both wildlife and friendship.
Building Community: WMS Restores Fences and Confidence

In partnership with a social prescriber, Wharfedale Men’s Shed replaced a senior citizen’s damaged front fence, restoring her sense of security. After the success of this project, the team was invited back to upgrade a side fence. With local support and teamwork, WMS delivered smart, professional solutions for her home.
Dedicated bench in need of TLC

Wharfedale Men’s Shed proudly refurbished a cherished teak bench, complete with a dedication to an Otley resident’s grandparents, located outside All Saints Church. With Robert B’s garage and trailer support, we transformed the bench after months of drying and restoration. Now restored, it joins others refurbished by WMS, enhancing Otley’s community spaces.
Otley Christmas Lights switched on with the help of WMS

When Otley Town Council needed a new Christmas Lights switch-on box, WMS created a compact design featuring a TNT-style switch and light display. After redesigning for durability, the box has been a success. Functional, attractive, and easy to store, it’s now a cherished part of Otley’s festive celebrations.
A New Tombola Machine for the Courthouse

Wharfedale Men’s Shed crafted a bright yellow tombola machine for Otley Courthouse, replacing the worn-out original. Featuring a magnetic lid and smooth operation, the machine has been a hit at events, showcasing the Shed’s skill and community spirit.
Clara the Elephant

Wharfedale Men’s Shed created a vibrant wooden elephant named Clara for the Leeds 2023 ‘Hidden Stories’ project, inspired by circus elephants parading through Otley. After delighting visitors at the Courthouse, Clara found a permanent home in a sensory garden for children with disabilities.
Swift Boxes and Butterfly Garden for Westgate Primary School, Otley

In June 2021, WMS collaborated with Wildlife Friendly Otley to craft swift boxes for Westgate Primary School. Later, they refurbished a deteriorated butterfly garden, replacing old sleepers and posts with precise craftsmanship. Despite delays, the project was completed in January 2022, creating a lasting space for students to observe butterflies.
